Course overview

Learning about Abstract Art is fascinating and rewarding. This course covers its evolution from 19th-century pioneers like JMW Turner to movements such as Impressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Modernism, and up to the 21st century. It also highlights lesser-known female artists who have been overlooked by the art world. Each lesson starts with an interactive visual presentation featuring these examples. You’ll learn and practice using various drawing and painting materials, including inks, chalk, oil pastels, watercolor, acrylic, collage, and mixed media. This course is suitable for complete beginners and those wanting to improve their skills and develop their own style.
This course is for early booking only.

Course description

The tutor (a professional exhibiting abstract artist) will show a filmed demo to give you an example of how to achieve this (and sometimes what not to do!) The group will then be directed to carry out the task, having been placed in a ‘breakout room’ in which a smaller selection of students congregate in order to be given appropriate advice and direction from the tutor. You get to see how the others are doing, which can be fascinating - everyone will have a different approach – the emphasis will be on adventurous experimentation. We will learn how to make abstract art that is unique and experimental, using chalk pastels, watercolour, acrylics, mixed media and collage. Artists studied will include JMW Turner, Kandinsky, Klee, Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Hilma af Klint, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and countless contemporary artists. Have fun and make art in a friendly like-minded group.
