Level 1: Covers basic skills and knowledge needed for this subject

Course description
Meeting on seats outside St James Park Café by the lake or inside if raining; sketch on location with techniques shown on how to draw people and link them into their surroundings you will also develop composition skills and using transparent layers of colour with watercolour. Ways to create rhythm to lead the eye around your drawing and painting sketches will be shown. The sketching sessions will help you capture the mood, light and atmosphere of the gardens using tonal contrast to show light and shadow on the trees, paths , water and people in watercolour and fine liner pen. We will look at ways to proportion and draw things in scale as well as where to start; ways of capturing the main shapes of the composition and building up a painting in transparent layers of colour. You will need to bring your own art materials, a small folding seat or plastic bag to put on a bench to sit on, a sketch book A4 or A3 of pastel or sugar paper for pastels, pencils HB, 2B , 5B,. Watercolour paints,small piece of was to use as a resist, 300gm papers, soft brushes, a palette and a fine liner pen.
