Art and Music Studies: Anniversaries Exhibitions and Events Autumn 2024

Course description
The main emphasis on the course concerns local events and significant anniversaries of composers and/ or artists. 2024 is a particularly good year for Anniversaries of composers and this course will concentrate on visual responses to these composers. We will also be focussing on current London Exhibitions and musical responses to them, such as Expressionism (Tate Modern) Now You See Us (Tate Britain) Van Gogh (National Gallery) etc. We will also examine the 100th Anniversary of the Surrealist Manifesto. We will celebrate the music of Anton Bruckner born September 1824 and Arnold Schoenberg, also born September 1874. Bruckner continued in the Beethovenian symphonic tradition, albeit inspired by Wagner, whilst Schoenberg is arguably the most
controversial of all composers, inventing an entirely new musical language. His output corresponds to the Tate Modern Expressionist Exhibition mentioned above. Other significant anniversaries will be Gustav Holst in September and Charles Ives in October. November will see the anniversaries of three major composers, starting with Gabriel Faure. We will also celebrate the life and work of Guillaume Dufay, and finishing with Puccini. The course content may well alter slightly, dependent on any exhibitions events, or obituaries being announced in the meantime, as yet unknown.
