Course overview

Whether you are a seasoned drummer or just wanting to get started, this practical class in African drumming will inspire you with music and culture. We will be using the Djembe Drums which are a percussion instrument originating from West Africa. Drums will be provided for your use during the class. Our experienced tutor will guide you to play the Djembe drum as part of a group of friendly, like-minded people. You will learn to use the primary notes, referred to as ‘bass,’ ‘tone’ and ‘slap’ to create different sounds. No experience needed, just the willingness to have a go and enjoy the music.

Course description

Alongside the drumming, find out about the rich history of the instrument and its place in African culture, as well as its influence on global music. Our tutor is a mine of information and will help you to understand the instrument and its roots. The practice of African drumming is also known to reduce stress and promote wellbeing, so it is a wonderful way to leave behind the stresses of the day!

You can bring your own drum or use one supplied by the tutor. No musical knowledge is required, just the enthusiasm to learn. The tutor will show you step-by-step how to create a sound from the drums using your fingers and palms. You will learn how to use various parts of the hand and drum to produce different sounds. Our patient tutor will break down the rhythms into manageable chunks to make learning easier. You will soon be able along with the group to play basic patterns and then more complex rhythms.

After this course you will have the opportunity to progress to a higher-level course in African Drumming which will further your skills and knowledge of the instrument or another WEA course of your choosing if you wish.
