Course overview

An exciting course exploring the interaction between artists and their culture that often created radical art, sometimes bristling with unsettling images but always reflecting the ideas and beliefs that motivated them. We will look at the ways in which a range of artists translated their experience of reality into their own pictorial language. Topics to be covered include the work of Frida Kahlo, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Stanley Spencer, Edward Burra, Paula Rego, Jacob Lawrence and Andy Warhol. We will also look at the social, cultural, political context in which they worked. No experience necessary, just an open -minded interest in art.

Course description

This is an online art appreciation course taught by an experienced, enthusiastic and supportive tutor who will display artists’ paintings on screen as you learn more about each one. If you have an open-minded interest in art, the course will help you to understand and recognise the relationship between the life and the art in the work under discussion, for example Kahlo’s accident and her injuries as a dominant subject of her art. We will also look at the influences, social, cultural and/or political of the artists under discussion, for example World War I and its impact on the work of Stanley Spencer. You will be able to ask questions and provide feedback if you wish. You will also learn to identify key characteristics of the work of the artists, for example how they used colour, line or composition; and learn to recognise what is meant by the art historical terms used in the course, such as “modernism”, “naturalism” and “surrealism”. After the course you may wish to study the artists independently or enrol on a further WEA course.
