Course overview
Course description
Students will listen to and discuss a range of contemporary music, from film scores to songs, to develop a better understanding of the powerful effects that music can have on a listener. Analysis will incorporate both personal interpretation and music theory.
There will also be opportunities during the classes to have a go at creating your own music, as well as playing parts of existing music. This will be done through tutor guided exercises in note recognition (including following sheet music), aural skills and improvisation.
To take part in these activities, students can use either a piano/keyboard, a touchscreen app for digital devices, or an interactive website.
The course is suitable for complete beginners, as well those who are looking to review their existing knowledge and/or broaden their music analysis skills. Your tutor will undertake an initial assessment with you at the beginning of the course to identify your starting point.
This course leads onto a choice of intermediate courses in the Spring term, and advanced courses in the Summer term. Students with a strong grasp of both music theory and music analysis skills may prefer to skip this beginners course and join a higher level course in the Spring or Summer.
