Course overview

Practice techniques for creating short stories, true or untrue. We'll apply the principles of short fiction to our writing, with the focus this term on thinking about how point-of-view impacts on structure. There will be writing exercises, discussions, an optional weekly homework task and feedback. Guidance on feedback techniques will be provided. The course content has flexibility, and will be adapted to suit the needs of the group. Suitable for improvers. This course uses the same content as the Friday morning course, Creative Writing: Point-of-View, and the Thursday morning fortnightly course, Creative Writing: Point-of-View, therefore you need only enrol on to one of them.

Course description

This course for adults is suited to those with some experience of creative writing – prose, poetry or memoir. Regular optional homework tasks will help us to establish an effective writing routine, and promote the building of a portfolio of writing. The focus will be on prose forms, particularly short story and flash fiction, but experiments with style are encouraged. The emphasis is on enjoyment, and finding your own style in a friendly and positive group environment.

Learning Outcomes:

- Analyse a piece of creative writing, with a view to applying point-of-view techniques in my own writing.

- Discuss the way point-of-view affects structure in a given piece of writing.

- Create and submit a piece of writing on the group Canvas homework-tab.

- Contribute constructive feedback on a piece of writing.

- Respond in writing to an exercise set by the tutor.
