In this course you will listen to, explore and enjoy a wide range of classical music from its earliest eras through to the present day by well-known and more marginal composers. In doing so you will engage with several individual works in different forms in each session thinking about the circumstances of and reasons behind their creation, and the particulars of the sonic landscape they offer through ideas such as genre, style, technique and arrangement, this will set the musical piece in context and also dive into the way the piece was constructed. To complement this we will also pay attention to the life and background of each different composer and how their approach to composition contributes to a distinctive oeuvre. You will also listen to examples of music from other genres such as jazz, film music, contemporary/neo/post-classical, ambient and electronic music.

In this 10-week, online course learners will read, explore and enjoy stories from an array of the great texts that belong to the mythic traditions of the Classical world and wider antiquity; you will consider the hold that mythology continues to have over the modern mind, thinking about how and why these works and stories still resonate today and have persisted for so long, as well as setting them against their own time and seeking to understand their original intent. In doing so we will think about genre, style and form, as well as considering authorship and culture through appraising the backgrounds and context of each text, and particular writers, whilst also looking into more modern art and culture that has been influenced by and reworked these myths, this will add crucial context but also dive into the modern reading of the texts and myths. All texts will be read in English translation in a supportive atmosphere and with a knowledgeable tutor

Opera is often seen as an exotic and irrational art form, with some strange practices such as a woman playing the part of a man. By examining how opera has developed from its origins around 1600, this course explains how opera has responded to changes in society and the differing tastes of different countries in Europe. This course is for anyone whether you enjoy opera or are simply curios to know more.

During this friendly 6-week course, for those whose first language is NOT English, you will be able to improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening in English. The course will use the themes of Shopping, Cinema and Heroes to practise English in a relatable and meaningful way. It will include individual, pair and group work with opportunities to improve all four main skills. To join this course, you will need to have a reasonable level of English as materials will be at Level 1 (B1/B2) proficiency. The course will cover some aspects of pronunciation and grammar in addition to practising the 4 main skills.

This 10-week course will prepare you with necessary skills and knowledge to become effective maternity support worker. This course introduces the role and responsibilities of a Maternity Support worker, understanding the importance of supporting pregnant women and newborns and introduction to basic healthcare practices and ethics in maternity care. This course also emphasizes personal and professional development, critical thinking, and the application of learned concepts in practical settings. Through a combination of theoretical learning, practical exercises, and group activities, you will be prepared to make meaningful contributions in the field of maternity care. It includes study skills and referencing to also help you prepare for further study.

This course will be delivered through a combination of hands-on drumming sessions, interactive workshops, guided listening sessions, cultural explorations, and performances. Participants will have access to a variety of drums and instruments for hands-on learning and practice. Learners will explore the rich diversity of musical traditions and cultures through drumming develop foundational rhythmic skills and techniques on various percussion instruments.

On this course, you will learn about the key elements of a CV and follow this structure to build your own. You will be guided through a step-by-step process allowing you to build your CV as the course progresses. You will learn about the type of personal information you should include, how to construct your previous education and work experience, as well as how to write an effective personal statement. You will use your existing English to communicate with others on the course but you will continue to develop your wider English skills and learn new vocabulary connected to CV writing. You will need to be working at ESOL Level 1 to join this course. If you are a new WEA learner we will ask you to do a short initial assessment to check your ESOL Level. This is a beginners course to learn some practical skills in hand and skin care, beauty techniques - basic make up application , providing a basic manicure or pedicure treatment, learn how to follow health and safety and working with others effectively in the beauty sector. The purpose of this course is to provide learners with a sound basic knowledge and understanding of the practical skills outlined & to enable them to Develop their skills through being introduced to the beauty Industry and learn about how you should present a professional image in the salon. It will provide learners with a foundation for further learning.

The Nail Technology course provides a comprehensive foundation in the art and science of nail care, covering techniques for manicures, , nail enhancements, and nail art. You will learn about nail anatomy, nail diseases, health and safety practices, and client consultation. Hands-on training includes nail shaping, cuticle care, polish application, and various nail enhancement methods such as acrylics, gels, and nail extensions. The course also explores current trends in nail design and customization, equipping students with the skills to create unique and professional nail services. Upon completion, students will be prepared for a career as a nail technician in the beauty industry.

he Prom Hair and Makeup course provides a comprehensive introduction to creating stunning looks for prom events. You will learn a variety of hairstyling techniques, from elegant updos to glamorous curls, tailored to suit different hair types and lengths. In addition, you will explore makeup application skills, including contouring, highlighting, and eyeshadow techniques to enhance natural beauty and create a flawless finish. The course covers colour theory, skin preparation, and product selection, ensuring you have the knowledge and tools to create personalized looks for prom attendees. Upon completion, you will be able to offer professional hair and makeup services for prom events, helping clients feel confident and beautiful on their special day.
