Whitehawk Inn Training Centre will open in September and aims to provide life-changing skills to support locals into employment and boost wellbeing.

The centre, located on Whitehawk Road, will offer a range of community-based learning and skills courses. Residents will find support into work with courses including:

  • Maths and English Functional Skills
  • Barista courses
  • ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes
  • CV building
  • Digital skills
  • Accredited pre-access to college courses

Community-based learning courses will also be available to those looking to increase confidence and enhance wellbeing. These will include:

  • Green courses – gardening and seeding courses to support a healthier environment.
  • Art studio – our basement studio will be used for arts and crafts, knitting, crocheting and sewing.
  • Budgeting and numbers – Understanding numbers and developing a healthy relationship with money.

The building, historically a public house, was previously used as a community centre before its closure in March 2023. The WEA has high hopes to engage the community and local partnerships with the accessible hub which will include a cafe, access to IT equipment and a bustling community garden with bike storage.

WEA CEO and General Secretary Simon Parkinson said, “We are delighted to bring a brand-new skills hub to Brighton to provide life-changing opportunities for those who need it the most. Residents in Whitehawk deserve investment. Our long-term vision is to not only supply opportunities to upskill local people by providing pathways into work, but to also support wellbeing and inclusion through our learning offer.”
