History: Highlights of Saxon Archaeology
Why was Britain's genetic make-up radically changed between 500 and 800 AD/CE? Were the newcomers environmental refugees, pagan plunderes, invaders or missionaries? Who were these new arrivals and what were they doing over here? This course will use recent information on sites, finds and their interpretation to shed new light on Anglo-Saxon Age archaeology in Britain. How and why the migrations took place will be illustrated using new (since 1980) excavation evidence, metal detecting finds, scientific analysis and aeriel remote sensing data.

Art Appreciation: Victorian Art - Town and Country
The Victorian years saw unprecedented industrialisation which changed the face of Britain but also attitudes. Industrial developments were perceived as both positive and negative, but the countryside was viewed as a tradition, community and continuity. Yet images of the country, as well as the town, reveal the complexity of a society adapting to the modern world. Depiction of idyllic country scenes and grimy urban life reveal deep tension in Victorian society. This course will reveal that complexity and the contradictions which characterised the years 1837 to 1901 by examining paintings, engravings, photographs cartoons and the literature of the period.

History: My Virtual Museum; a collection of elite, local images
The story of my journey into collecting old postcards, vintage photographs,
and interesting artefacts/ephemera, and the motivation behind establishing a
virtual museum, with the generous assistance from others. Throughout,
numerous images depicting each stage of my collecting will be displayed,
categorised by subject matter. Predominantly featured will be vintage
photographs depicting scenes and people from northern Lincolnshire,
particularly Grimsby and Cleethorpes. Additionally, there will be recent
photographs showcasing intriguing collectibles mainly associated with this
region. Lastly, I will outline my future thoughts and plans for this venture.

Join us to take a look at the amazing yet unsung women of astronomy and space who were pioneers but often overlooked or ignored. From ancient times to the modern era it is time to shine a light on their amazing achievements. From Aganice of Thessaly, a Greek astronomer of the 2nd or 1st century BC, Hypatia of Alexandria 370 – 450 AD, Elisabeth Hevelius (17th century), Caroline Herschel (18th Century) to ‘Pickerings Women’ at Harvard and into the modern age of spaceflight with such luminaries as Annie Easley, Katherine Johnson, Astronauts Sally Ride and pioneering Mae Jemison amongst many others.

History: Highlights Of British Archaeology: Viking (800 AD) To High Middle Ages
Recent fieldwork allows us to define three distinct phases of Anglo-Scandinavian occupation: raiding, conquest and settlement. Sites at Repton and Torksey provide evidence of Viking Age winter camps from the Conquest Period, whereas spatial analysis of both artefact scatters and place names vividly demonstrate the areas of Norse settlement.
We shall be looking at major developments in shipping technology from the Saxon through to the High Middle Ages, without which none of these invasions, including 1066, would have been possible.
As part of our Medieval studies we shall examine the eclectic Medieval “Voynich Manuscript”. Using the illustrations we shall try to make some sense of it.

Archaeology: The Archaeology of Grimsby
Underneath the streets of Great Grimsby there lie three destroyed churches, several thousand medieval corpses, the remains of two cloisters, and a buried medieval port, complete with wharves, 'mud docks', crane bases, back-filled cellars and warehouse foundations.
Could St Marys church, closed in 1586, have been founded in the Anglo-
Scandinavian period and perhaps give some indication of 10th century
settlement at around the time of the legendary Grim?
The course will look at the development of human settlement around salty inlets and muddy creeks and on the higher and drier promontory where the town developed.

William Blake (1757 – 1827) is simply the greatest poet/pictorial artist Britain has ever seen! His themes are universal and his demand that society recognise the folly and inhumanity that prevailed unfortunately is still relevant. Moulded by the radicalisation of the English Civil War, his words and images are a call to arms to stand up for the vision that Britan could be if the shackles of convention were broken.

History: Women, Queenship and Power in Medieval England
In this talk, we will explore attitudes towards women in the Middle Ages, especially to women as rulers. In the Middle Ages, just one woman – the Empress Matilda, daughter of King Henry I – inherited a claim to the English throne. Yet, on her father’s death, her cousin, Stephen, seized control of England, so that Matilda was never crowned as queen. For many medieval people, the idea of a woman ruling in her own right was foreign to contemporary minds. We will look at why this was and why queens consort, such as Matilda of Boulogne, King Stephen’s wife, and Eleanor of Aquitaine, King Henry II’s wife, represented more acceptable (if still occasionally controversial) figures of female political power.
