This festive course combines the joys of holiday crafting and cooking to help participants prepare for a memorable Christmas season. Students will learn to create beautiful handmade decorations, gifts, and ornaments, as well as delicious holiday treats and meals. Through hands-on workshops, demonstrations, and interactive activities, participants will develop skills in various crafts and culinary techniques, all centred around the Christmas theme. This course aims to inspire creativity, bring out holiday cheer, and equip students with the skills to make their Christmas celebrations special and personal.

This workshop has been set up to create a festive and beautiful Christmas wreath using a variety of materials and techniques. You will learn how to design, assemble, and decorate a wreath, gaining both skills and a finished product to take home. You will leave the workshop with a handcrafted Christmas wreath and the knowledge to create more in the future. The workshop aims to foster creativity, provide a fun and festive activity, and enhance your holiday decor skills. No experience is needed as the tutor will offer full support and guidance to help you make your Christmas Wreath.

This course will explore the history of Christmas celebrations, focusing on three distinct periods: Medieval and Tudor Christmases, Victorian Christmases, and Christmas in the last 50 years. Learners will find out more about the cultural, social, and religious influences that have shaped Christmas traditions over the centuries. We will have a comprehensive look using documents, films and contemporary sources at how Christmas traditions have evolved over time, influenced by religious, cultural, social, and economic changes.

You’ll get practical budgeting tips you can apply in the kitchen. This course is ideal for you if you’d like to learn how to cook homemade meals on a reduced budget.

The Christmas story has probably inspired more art than any other subject. From medieval icons of the Virgin and Child to the Renaissance paintings of the shepherds and the wise men; and from stained glass windows to Christmas cards, the story has been at the forefront of western art.

The Christmas Truce is one of the most mythologised and celebrated events of the First World War, which has featured in film, song and fiction. In this one-off session, we will attempt to uncover the actual story behind the event, exploring the truce or truces through letters, reports, photographs and retrospective accounts. The course will be interesting to those with an interest in the Great War, and the manner in which that conflict has been interpreted in the century since its ending, but the course will also appeal to those with an interest in how societies shape and define themselves by their myths.

This course is a follow on from the hugely popular first course that ran at the Reading Rooms last year. You do not need to have attended the first course to participate on this one. Join guest tutor Debbie Young at the Reading Rooms in Billericay on this fun and interactive one-off free course for carers, their companions, supporters e.g. volunteers/staff and former carers as part of the Care 2 delivery. This study day will examine the historicity of the gospel stories and how they have been interpreted by artists through the centuries. A wide range of art will be shown and there will be space for discussion and for learners to offer their own suggestions and experiences.
