WEA courses

This course will guide the students and lead them into exploring different topics relating to the subject of the four seasons. The group will participate in activities and art work that illustrate those themes. The students will be involved in different activities to encourage increased knowledge about the subjects. The tasks will be supported by discussions and the sharing of views. The workshop will also develop art skills and foster good social skills. The culmination of the workshop will be to produce practical tasks that illustrate the various themes covered.

Thanks for your understanding.* We will be cooking together in real time, making a variety of dishes, with advice and ideas on how to change the quantities to suit the number of people you are cooking for. We will look at ways of cooking and baking for one or two, or enough for a party. We shall be measuring ingredients and there will be time to find out about all the different ways measurements are written in recipes, so you can cook with confidence. Recipes will be put on Canvas before the course begins, so you can go shopping if you are going to cook along with me. All questions are welcome during the session, novice cooks are welcome along with those who have more experience and we will share ideas. Outcome: Double and halve the quantities in a recipe using metric and imperial measures while cooking a variety of dishes.

Learn to Draw and Paint Animals in Watercolour and Mixed Media Unleash your creativity and connect with nature's beauty in our one-day course, "Learn to Draw and Paint Animals in Watercolour and Mixed Media," hosted at the welcoming Springbourne Library and facilitated by The WEA (Workers' Educational Association). This inspiring workshop invites participants to explore the vibrant world of animal artistry through watercolour and mixed media techniques. Throughout the course, you'll be guided through the process of capturing the essence and character of animals in your artwork. With expert instruction, you'll learn to use line, tone, texture, and colour to bring your chosen animal portrait to life in a unique and expressive way.

Discover the art of macrame in our 3-hour Beginner's Macrame Workshop. This hands-on class is ideal for newcomers eager to learn the fundamentals of this intricate craft. You'll be introduced to essential techniques, including the square knot, half hitch, and lark's head knot. Guided by an experienced tutor, you will design and construct your own macrame wall hanging, transforming simple cords into a beautiful piece of art. By the end of the workshop, you'll have a completed wall hanging ready for display and the skills to continue creating macrame projects on your own. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own supplies.

If you do not live in a West Sussex postcode area, please do not apply for this course - thanks for your understanding* On this course we are going to sow some seeds to grow a selection of edible plants: herbs and vegetables on a windowsill. The session is delivered in real time, so you can sow seeds along with me asking questions as we go. A list of suggested resources will be on Canvas before the course begins so you can go shopping. We will explore the limitations of windowsill growing, and the advantages, particularly in relation to cost. We shall see which windowsill crops are economically worth growing, and which aren't! I will cover onward care and harvesting, and any questions will be welcome, as will sharing your own experiences - good and bad!

This course is an introduction to ways of viewing paintings made in Europe in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The course that uses a selected number of paintings to provide a basis for the beginnings of an appreciation and understanding of some of the seminal ideas in aesthetics and philosophy of the period. The selection will encourage a focus on the paintings with specific themes and attentions; from the early use of artificial perspective and proportions to involvement in a world that represents the complexity of thought with feelings The course will include a study of selected works by Giotto and Masaccio, Jan van Eyck. and Rogier van der Weyden, Piero della Francesca and Sandro Botticelli, Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini.

This is a practical pottery session where you will have the opportunity to try different hand-building techniques to create your own individual pottery work. In a relaxed and informal session, you can try out the basic skills used to make and decorate pottery. You can explore the tools and techniques used for hand-building including coiling, pinching and surface decoration. We will be using air-drying clay so you can take your pieces home with you at the end. Join us for this relaxing and fun session where you can connect with other like-minded individuals, share ideas, and learn from each other.

During this course you will be invited to consider how we handle potential landfill materials and waste, depending on how they can be used. You will learn how to transform an old product into something which has a greater value than the original, by re-working and decorating throw away objects transforming them into new and usable plant pots and/or garden decorations. At the end of the course, your new upcycled products will be placed outside, at the back of the Hub, to also uplift the environment and replenish the space for the enjoyment and benefit of all.
