On this course we will examine the following novels:

A Pale View of Hills - Kazuo Ishiguro
Innocence - Penelope Fitzgerald
The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps - Michel Faber.
These texts will take us inside contemporary British fiction, and
earmark those authors who have contributed to the evolution of a
distinctive voice in British fiction in the last fifty years, from the
years of Thatcher, New Labour to the present. We will explore each
writers’ techniques and themes, and how they address the themes
of British identity.
Discussions will be lively with plenty of opportunities to voice
your opinions.

World Cinema
We will consider a range of films, from classics to contemporary cinema. We will discuss the style and meaning of diverse extracts drawing on key ideas from Film Studies. We will consider films from diverse countries, comparing and contrasting these with American and British cinema. The class will be organised around discussion of selected extracts, with guidance on points to look for, including different aspects of film such as the screenplay and cinematography. Students will be encouraged to develop their responses in small groups. Case studies will be included on Alfred Hitchcock and British cinema.

Textiles and fashion through the ages
Fashion reflects the influence of politics, trade, social exchange and foreign encounter. In this course, we will explore the changing fashions of seventeenth-century Britain. Alongside sessions that consider the history of fashion are practical, hands-on sessions that explore the materials used, and construction techniques employed by makers of the period. These texts are an eclectic blend of plays, novels and the
autobiographical in the case of Denton Welch, an eccentric
and now largely forgotten.
There will be great scope for discussion and the voicing of
