If you’re interested in finding out how the English language developed (and why we don’t all speak German, Danish or French instead of English) this course is for you. We look at the development of the English language through seven different lenses, starting with Old English (Anglo-Saxon) which built on Celtic languages and Latin. We explore the many influences on English including the Vikings through Old Norse, Norman French, Biblical English, Shakespearean English and Global English.

This course is a follow on to the previous ‘Writing Your First Novel: Next Level’ course, but suitable for newly enrolling students with experience writing fiction. 'Writing your first Novel: Advanced' is all about the deeper craft of creative writing—those elements that will make your work really stand out when you are making your first steps into the world of writing, regardless of whether you are planning on submitting your work, or if you are just writing for fun. Giving you the opportunity to develop an effective creative writing practice, and further personal development, especially if you want to get that first novel out of your head and onto paper.

Functional maths improves your numeracy skills through real-life situations. Learn maths in context. Develop practical maths skills to help you in everyday situations such as organising your personal budget or applying discounts when shopping. This level 1 functional skills maths course can help you get a GCSE-equivalent qualification in maths. You’ll learn practical maths skills employers look for. Functional Skills qualifications are free if you don't already have a GCSE in English or Maths at grades A*-C, or 4-9. We'll check your level and any previous qualifications before you start. This ensures you are on the correct course. This course is funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Still life is a unique genre of photography, which depicts inanimate objects or subject matters devoid of people. On this course you will learn how to look closely and consider ways of making the ‘ordinary’ appear interesting and extraordinary! You will experiment with composition, lighting and set-up, whilst considering how objects, possessions and natural forms symbolise some kind of story. You will learn how to read and discuss images with others, reflecting on your own images, when considering visual communication.

This course is for students to improve confidence in their ability to develop artistic skills and creativity. Learning the skills of a variety of crafts to make unique dimensional projects, using a variety of resources including recycling when possible. You will learn using a range of different teaching and learning activities to include watching and following step by step demonstrations, with one to one help and guidance. You will learn in a safe welcoming and supportive environment, working together with fellow students and the tutor. The course is suitable for a complete beginner in crafts. No prior knowledge is needed, just a desire to learn and develop your skills and creativity.

Build up your writing skills with these ESOL classes. This English course for beginners is aimed at speakers of other languages. It will help you learn writing skills that will support you to work or study in the UK. This ESOL entry 2 writing course builds on skills you learnt at entry 1. Expand your knowledge of grammar and improve your writing skills in English. There are also reading and speaking & listening courses at this level. This basic course will introduce learners to the world at work and the language needed to enter it. The course has been developed in partnership with Wolverhampton City Council which refers learners to this and other programmes hosted at the Old School, which is a community centre run by Blakenhall Action Community Forum. This course is particularly suitable for students are unemployed and have been referred by Job Centres to improve their spoken and written English and thereby get closer to getting a job.
