British Literature 1980 - 2011 (Part 2)
Part 2 of this course builds on our first ten weeks before Christmas, but as each text is studied individually, it is possible to pursue Part 2 separately.

The Sense of an Ending - Julian Barnes.
There will be a wealth of opportunity for discussion of these texts and their themes, which will involve memory, how narratives are structured and gender issues. The texts will also introduce concepts relating to how one reads texts closely and aligns these texts with modern literary movements.

History: Fascism and the Troubled 1930s
The course will examine the origins of Fascism and National Socialism against the backdrop of post war turmoil in Italy and Germany.
We will see how the emergence of Stalin as supreme leader in the USSR led to a radicalisation of the economy and political terror.
We will consider the effects of the economic crisis in the democratic countries, USA, Britain and France.
Finally, we will consider how the radicalisation of economies and politics impacted on international relations culminating in the outbreak of a second European war in 1939.

History: The House of Lancaster
The struggles of John of Bedford and his aim to successfully conclude the war with France forms the main part of study this term, examining in some detail the various campaigns which he either personally orchestrated or otherwise approved, in attempts to either break the remaining pockets of French resistance, or else drive the French monarchy into a state of submission. At the same time however, we will also look at the youth and condition of the young Henry VI, and make some assessment of his early character, as well as the nature of the English government that surrounded him.
