Do you want to start learning English? Come and join First Steps In ESOL. You can meet other people and improve your English skills. Classes are held in a friendly and supportive venue with good bus links from Burnley town centre. This course is for beginners. After completing it, you could move onto a First Steps in ESOL 2 and then start getting ready for an Entry 1 course such as Get Ready for ESOL Entry 1. We’ll cover... - Using numbers 1 to 50 in English - Match lower- and upper-case letters - Ask and answer questions in English - Spell out your name, saying the letters correctly - Match common everyday signs to their meanings in English - Improve your confidence to learning.

ESOL for Beginners is designed to help non-native English speakers develop fundamental language skills. The course covers essential topics such as basic vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Interactive activities, practical exercises, and real-life scenarios provide a supportive environment for learners to practice and improve their English communication skills. The course aims to build confidence and competence in everyday conversations, essential tasks, and cultural understanding. Suitable for individuals with little to no prior knowledge of English, it lays a strong foundation for further language study and integration into English-speaking communities.

This course will explore the following texts: Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad; Short Stories by Kipling; The Siege of Krishnapur - JG Farrell; The Jewel in the Crown - Paul Scott, and The English Patient - Michael Ondaatje. The course will track the decline of Empire and the concomitant social and political uncertainty, the relationship between the colonial and the colonised Other, and develop themes relating to identity and the subjective nature of historical revision. There will be ample scope for discussion of at times difficult and controversial debates, and we will focus on the continuing relationship that exists between contemporary writers and later writers vis-a-vis issues of guilt and responsibility.

You will be given an opportunity to learn new skills and techniques from a range of different types of art and craft. For example, painting stones, glass, wood, and dream catchers. You will use a variety of different resources and medias such as wool, fabrics, and jars. You will learn about the development of the different arts and crafts that we enjoy today. You will also learn about and gain an insight into how different techniques and skills have evolved in certain crafts over time.

This is a pre-employment programme delivered online that is designed to support you into work within Adult Social Care. The programme will help you to prepare for work in a care setting. The programme consists of up to three elements: GMCA Care Certificate (where you will cover the theory elements of the Care Certificate), L1 Stress Awareness and L1 Mental Health Awareness (additional accredited courses you can join if suitable). Once you have completed the course with WEA, GM Careers will place you for a working interview in a social care setting. This is designed like a working interview, to give you the opportunity to try out the working environment.
