“Everyone has their own truth and their own values.”; “What counts as knowledge changes over time – for example, we no longer believe that the sun goes round the earth.” “Different societies have different moralities.” “People will never agree on how best to organise society.” Statements like these can be heard and read in public debates and on social media. The course uses philosophical ideas to explore 1. that how we think, which moral values we think we should follow and what we think is the best society to live in varies between individuals, cultures and historical periods 2. that it is not possible to reach agreement and 3. that if we all agreed our societies would be less vibrant and less worth living in. This is an introductory course, so no previous knowledge of Philosophy is expected.

If you have not studied for a long time, or worried about how to start an assignment, or manage your time, this is the course for you. You will have the opportunity to personalise your approach to study and learning. Over the course you will find out what works best for you. General study skills are not for a specific subject, they are skills that cover all subject areas. The study skills you will develop at this level will help as you go through each topic on the course. To develop your study skills, you will practise a variety of tasks such as time management, active listening skills, note taking and many more. This will help you become more confident in the way you study. Study skills are not just for this course, they can be used in a variety of ways, for example solving problems in everyday life and managing your time successfully and learning to remain focused on a task.

Have you completed an introductory or a Level 1 helping in schools course? Then this introductory course is right for you. It will provide you with the necessary knowledge and study skills needed to prepare you for a Level 2 course. It will also provide you with the opportunity to practice using study skills such as quizzes, case studies and related texts. You will get the chance to discuss new topics with other learners and, ask and answer questions. You will also be given a brief outline of what you will learn on your course. Your tutor will give you constructive feedback to ensure you are ready for your next stage of learning.

"Introduction to Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools" is designed for anyone interested in gaining essential knowledge and skills to work with children and young people in educational settings. This course provides a comprehensive foundation in understanding schools as organisations, safeguarding, equality, diversity, and inclusion. Learners will also explore key aspects of health and safety and how to support positive behaviour in the learning environment. You will be able to understand the UK policies and procedures covering confidentiality, data protection and disclosure of information. Upon successful completion, you will be prepared to progress to a Level 2 Qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning with the WEA, opening opportunities for a career in education support roles.

Serge Prokofiev (1891-1953) composed some of this century’s most widely loved music – be it the ballet Romeo and Juliet or his work for children Peter and the Wolf. Yet due to his itinerant lifestyle and the secrecy that cloaked his final years in the USSR, he remains one of the least understood musicians of this century. This course will explore the full range of his 130 compositions in various genres through active listening, YouTube videos and live music, and will make comparisons with some of his lesser-known contemporaries. This six session course is face-2-face and is suitable for students at all levels. No previous knowledge is required and detailed background notes will be made available via Canvas, the WEA learning platform.

This is a practical art course where you will explore a range of art materials to create personal drawings and paintings. Grab your sketch pad, pencils or charcoal and join this friendly art class, where you'll learn basic techniques. You don't have to be an accomplished artist to join this group, this class is for everyone regardless of ability. Your tutor will explain different art techniques and give you the encouragement you need to find your inner artist.

During and after WW2 America left the troubled 1930s behind to become one of two Super Powers and a military and economic behemoth. How did this happen? What compromises were made en route? We will examine the period from 1930 to 1980 with particular emphasis on America’s place in the world. In doing so we will ask to what extent America is an Empire in denial. No previous knowledge is required though the latter decades are ones most of us will have lived through. How do our memories of that period compare with the longer perspective that the passage of time now allows.

This course will teach you how to use Microsoft Word to enhance your documents with formatting, styles, images and templates. Adjust page layout, spacing and page breaks. Find and replace words. Create a table, a list and review your document with the editor. In Microsoft Excel, you will learn how to enhance your spreadsheets by formatting data in cells, sort and filter data. Copying and linking data between worksheets. Use a range of Excel functions and formulas. Create and customise charts. Finally, in Powerpoint you will learn how to create a presentation. Enter, edit and format text on slides. Insert shapes and images - apply a design and transition it onto slides. Save and print your presentation.
