Course overview

This exciting learning opportunity is intended to help the participants to gain knowledge and confidence in using BSL. The intention is learning for further education, community engagement and possibly employment. The skills learnt on this course may help someone looking to secure employment in a school/college setting to learn some basic greetings to enable them to communicate at a basic level with someone in the deaf community. This course will be taught for 7 weeks in 2 hour sessions and will total 14 guided learning hours. The learning will take place at St Marys Community Centre Pontefract.

Course description

This is a fun and interactive course with the aim for learners to develop skills in using British Sign Language. The course is intended as an introduction to sign. The course will not only help learners to develop their sign vocabulary but will also assist them in learning more about deaf culture and some of the barriers that deaf people face in everyday society. Learners will be expected to engage in the use of Canvas to help to gather learning evidence for the learning outcomes for the course. Full support for this will be given and resources will be uploaded to Canvas to support learning outside of session time. Caroline Cleghorn will be the course tutor for this course and she will track and monitor learning progress to fully support all learners to achieve the intended learning outcomes for the course. Throughout the course there will be a range of learning activities that will feature interactive games, activities and discussions during the session time. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and work independently, in pairs and as a group. This will be a unique learning experience where you will develop a vast range of knowledge to further assist you in your next steps for learning British Sign Language.

What financial support is available?

We don't want anything to stand in your way when it comes to bringing Adult learning within reach so if you need anything to support you to achieve your goals then speak to one of our education experts during your enrolment journey. Most of our courses are government funded but if you don't qualify or need alternative financial help to access them then let us know.
