Get a teaching qualification to work in a variety of support roles in education. Learn knowledge and skills to work with children and young people. Get training in supporting teaching and learning in schools and colleges. You’ll learn a broad range of teaching skills for support roles in learning environments. This can help you to start work as a learning assistant, teaching assistant, or special needs assistant.

Course description

This Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning course trains you to become a learning support practitioner.

This course has a fully revised syllabus. You’ll learn the latest best practices and methodologies to support learning. It covers many aspects of specialist support in primary and secondary school environments.

Learn teaching skills to work in the classroom with children and young people. Develop activities to support learning alongside the teacher. Understand bilingual support, special needs support, and personal development. Learn practical skills to support child development and positive behaviour.

You’ll also learn effective communication techniques to handle confidential situations correctly. Understand safeguarding practices and how to protect the well-being of children. Recognise health and safety procedures and how they protect children in the classroom.

Your tutor will assess your learning through different tasks. These could include presentations, posters, leaflets, or worksheets. These tasks will be included in your portfolio for assessment.

At Certificate level, the Supporting Teaching and Learning Level 3 course requires you to do 100 hours in a placement setting. It takes around 350 hours to complete the course and can usually be done in 1 year.

This is a nested teaching qualification. This means you can "top up" to a Diploma to broaden your knowledge.

Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning courses prepare you to enter the workforce and be a source of support to teachers and students in the learning environment.

To take this course you’ll need to have access to the internet. You’ll use Canvas, the WEA’s digital learning portal, for communication and tasks.

Most of our courses are government funded but if you don't qualify or need alternative financial help to access them then let us know.
