Course overview

Do you love writing and want to write for money and/or because it floats your boat and makes you happy? Then join like-minded writers in advancing your skills at memoir and fiction, poetic lyrics and drama for stage and screen. Writing can be done from home, though not in a vacuum and this is the perfect opportunity to bounce ideas around, gain insights and try things out.

Course description

This course will get you diving in at the deep end, not only reading and discussing examples, but writing from the first week. We will be examining texts closely and exploring authors’ biographies all the better to learn how to construct our own writing and what we can do with our own life experience in written work. By the end of term, you will have written and had peer and tutor feedback on a life writing essay, a short story, poetic lyrics and drama, both for short film length. You can then go on to adapt these works of yours to longer versions and in any case write new work in these genres. The journaling exercises are very much writer-centred, designed to bring out your own preoccupations, whatever they are, so that you can better use them in writing, whether fact or fiction.
