Course overview

We may see artefacts discovered from archaeological excavations in books, online and in museums - but what has happened to an artefact before it gets to that point? This day session will introduce the journey that an artefact can take, from the point of manufacture through to it being found on an archaeological excavation and beyond. So, whether you are a complete beginner or have been interested in Archaeology for many years, this course will deliver so many interesting facts and learning. There will also be a break for lunch within this day course.

Course description

During this session we will consider the life cycle of an artefact, starting even before the artefact was manufactured. We will investigate the journey that it may have taken, asking questions such as how it may have been used, where did the materials come from and what might have happened from the time the artefact was no longer used through to it being found by an archaeologist who was excavating a site? We will use examples of artefacts made from different materials from sites around the world.

Your learning will involve lots of group discussions and if you have experience or knowledge of visiting an excavating site or seen an amazing artefact, please share your experiences with the group.

This is a fun and friendly course which can be open to delivering a next step course after this day course has completed. So, please speak with your tutor on where you would like your next journey to take you and we will do all we an to create this for you.
