Course overview

Join us for this course which will review historical events, from long ago up until recent years and link them with how newspaper and magazine cartoons reflected attitudes and controversies of that time. This beginner course will primarily focus on the historical context and political impacts of their cartoons rather than the artistic techniques but through that analysis students will gain a deeper understanding of the role of political cartoons in the 20th century.

Course description

Each session will focus on a particular cartoon and how it relates to an incident or event in the past. Students will have the opportunity to recall what they know or remember about his event before delving into critical analysis of the effectiveness of the cartoon alongside the accepted historian’s view of events. Using critical thinking skills, the tutor and learners will examine whether the cartoon illuminates the facts of the event or whether it shows the different perspective. If so, the class will examine the issue of provenance and try to understand what the cartoonist is trying to achieve through their works.
