Course description

This course explores the rich transport heritage of East Anglia, a region characterised by its flat terrain, navigable waterways, and accessible coastline. These geographic features, combined with fertile agricultural land and proximity to Europe, facilitated the development of extensive transport systems and travel routes. Over four weeks, we will delve into the history and impact of road, water, and rail transport in East Anglia.

Each week focuses on a different mode of transport. We begin with the evolution of roads, from early road makers to mail coaches and motor cars. Next, we explore the waterways, studying keels, wherries, and the importance of navigable rivers. The third week examines the expansion of the rail network and its transformative effect on businesses and tourism. In the final week, we bring these elements together by highlighting the personal stories of those involved in travel and transport.

The course utilises material and documentary evidence to provide a comprehensive understanding of each transport mode’s impact on the region. No prior knowledge is required, and all course materials will be provided by the tutor. There will be opportunities for discussion and questions throughout, and the supportive tutor will assist those interested in further study. Join us to discover how transport shaped East Anglia's landscape and history.
