Course overview
Course description
The second world war was fought across almost the whole globe yet in reality it was actually two wars, one for dominance in Europe and the other for empire in the far east, linked by combatants. To western minds it began in 1939 (or 1940 if you are Russian, 1941 if you are American) yet fighting in the east began at the latest in 1937 and a case can be made for 1931 as the commencement of the war. We now of the slaughter in the west after 1939 but little of the atrocities in China years before that. In this course I hope to put the origins into the true worldwide context whilst not ignoring events and key characters nearer to home.
