Course overview
Course description
Why did Josiah Wedgwood call his ceramics factory ""Etruria""? How did Wedgwood hear about the Etruscan pottery he attempted (very successfully) to copy? We knew about the Greeks and the Romans, but why not the Etruscans? This course will introduce students to the Etruscan civilisation, which existed in north-west Italy from the 8th to the 2nd centuries BCE. We shall see how, why and where it developed, its influences, achievements and external contacts. The artistic, architectural and scientific achievements of the Etruscans will be examined as will their beliefs and burial rites, their settlements and the economy. We shall look at the discovery of Etruscan culture in the 18th and 19th centuries, and discover how Etruscan culture morphed into the development of Early Rome as a city. We shall also look at surviving Etruscan sites.
