Course overview

Richard the Lionheart and John. Two brothers, the sons of a powerful King. Siblings, rivals, enemies. The course focuses on two contrasting Kings of England. One is considered the greatest of all monarchs, and the other the worst King ever to sit on the throne.

Course description

In 1189, Richard, the third son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, became King of England, Duke of Normandy and Duke of Aquitaine. Days before, he was in open rebellion against his father. The empire he inherited stretched from the Scottish borders to the Pyrenees. Considered by some to be one of England's heroes and greatest monarchs, upon his death, his younger brother, John, assumed control of the empire. His reign is viewed as one of the worst in English history. Within a few years he had lost all of his inheritance. The course seeks to set the record straight and separate the myth from the historical truth. It looks at contemporary sources from England and the continent and considers the achievements of both and how the two Kings have been perceived by history.
