Course overview

The course aims to introduce learners to the long history of British film, its unique institutions, and how its story crosses over with both that of Hollywood and of the European film industries closer to home. We’ll take a deep dive into each major historical period of the industry in the context of its times and wider social change, from the earliest cinematic experiments to the present day. With a wealth of clips and background material.

Course description

The British film industry represents over a century of creativity and innovation, and is responsible for some of the most memorable movies ever produced – as well as some uniquely British moments. Over five weeks we’ll examine the studios, directors, and stars that shaped an artistic and commercial powerhouse to rival that of our friends in Hollywood, from the industry’s origins in the pioneering experiments of the late 19th century, through the prolific years of the second world war when movies played such an important part in the nation’s morale, to the new wave of realistic drama and a re-energised Britain in the ‘60s, followed almost immediately by the downturn of the subsequent decade and the gradual rebuilding of the industry in the years since then. No previous knowledge is required.
