Course overview
Course description
Explore the characteristics of different materials and develop your understanding of how to work with them. Work with different tools and equipment used in textile design. Learn about health and safety procedures. Plan, design, and create a final textile craft item. When you complete your project, you will have the opportunity to share it with the group.
Research successful textile enterprises and understand employment opportunities in the sector. This course introduces a business element to help get you ready to work with your craft skills.
Textile courses can teach you skills employers look for to get arts and crafts or textiles job roles. They can also help you learn skills to work independently as a costume-maker, tailor, or craft-maker. Your tutor will help you understand employment opportunities for working with textile crafts.
Textiles courses are available at different levels. Short, medium, and long courses, called Awards, Certificates, and Diplomas, are available. Longer courses take more time but help you to learn more skills in your field. Your WEA tutor can help you choose the length of course which suits you.
This craft course is an Award. It is the shortest course at this level. To get your qualification you need to achieve 10 credits. This usually takes around 100 hours.
Produce craft plans, designs, and sketches for your portfolio. You’ll be supported throughout your studies by your dedicated WEA tutor.
We prioritise flexible learning at the WEA. If you have any special requirements, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
After this course, you can go on to study for a Level 3 Award in Creative Craft (Textiles). You can also take sewing or fashion courses, depending on your interests. If you are unsure about the right pathway, your WEA tutor will be happy to help you consider your options.
Please note that you’ll need access to the internet to take this course. This is so you can access video calls and our digital learning platform, Canvas. Your tutor will use it to send you communications, materials, and tasks.
