If there is such a thing, at any time the “national mood” in any country is reflected in the cultural products of the period - visual works, theatre productions, the movies, the literature. The course will provide an overview of the decade from the artistic and cultural viewpoint. This will include the art movements which emerged such as Abstract Expressionism, exemplified by people like Jackson Pollock, music developments such as rock'n'roll famously promoted by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and many others and epoch-making movies such as West Side Story.

Meeting at the Tate Britain, Pimlico London; side entrance Manton Street; in the Entrance Hall; On this outing at the gallery, you will view and compare and contrast, artists from a variety of art movements with the guidance of tutor Caroline Levisse, British works of art made from the 1880s to 1960s. We will look at the paintings of George Clausen, mark Gertler, Gwen John, Ben Nicholson, Eileen Agar, Graham Sutherland and many more. We will also consider sculptures, with the work of Gaudier-Breszka, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Elizabeth Frink. The aim of the visit is to deepen your knowledge of British art, as well as practice looking at and interpreting paintings and sculptures. This is a follow on course from Q00019786.

In this course we will examine the stories of a series of pandemics and epidemics which influenced national or world history in some way. In the process we will review the contexts in which these occurred and also consider issues about the interpretation of evidence and the clash of historical arguments. The main method used will be segmented powerpoint presentations but as always the sessions are intended to be interactive. By agreement there may be some change in the schedule and topics.
