Course overview
Course description
This workshop is designed to introduce you to the roles and responsibilities of a good community interpreter. Our aim is to give you an overview of the role and from there you can decide whether this is a subject you would like to pursue and study in more depth. Our experienced tutor will cover the key elements, skills and qualities required and the opportunities which are available for volunteers or as paid employment. You will need to speak two or more languages and be willing to learn new vocabulary and skills. Community interpreting is a lifeline for people of different language backgrounds, allowing them to access the public services they need and connect to their community. We will cover some of the additional skills an interpreter needs to succeed such as sensitivity, empathy, and professionalism. This course can also help you decide if you’re interested in pursuing community interpreting jobs. Come along to this workshop and find out if community interpreting is for you. At the end of the workshop your tutor will be able to help you decide regarding your next steps and further learning opportunities.
