Creative Writing: Writing the City

Course overview
This course will introduce you to techniques to bring a city alive in your stories, either fictional or non fiction, long or short form writing. This workshop consists of a blend of activities: writing exercises to practice your craft; close reading of extracts from published inspirational writers and teaching points on creative writing techniques. There is an opportunity to share your fresh words in small groups and receive gentle, appreciative feedback.

Course description
Writing the City is an introduction to creative writing techniques that will help bring a city alive in your stories either fictional or non fiction. We’ll be inspired by writers who’ve captured our imagination through their portrait of urban life from Elena Ferrante to Teju Cole and Lara Vapnyar. Through writing exercises and the opportunity to share your work in class and receive appreciative feedback from the tutor and peers, you’ll develop a fuller sense of what makes a city setting unforgettable. The workshop will inspire you to write, get words on your page and equip you with techniques to experiment with after the class has finished.
