Course overview
Course description
Are you interested in Philosophy? Do you enjoy learning and having interesting discussions? Then join The WEA’s latest course to learn about the work and life of Austro-Hungarian economist and anthropologist Karl Polanyi and his highly influential book The Great Transformation (1944). Polanyi’s work comes from three streams – his direct opposition to the market liberalism of the Austrian School of Economics, the idea that the potential for fascism is actually built into free market capitalism, and his Christian socialist ethics. During the course we will look at some of his ideas such as market embeddedness, the double-movement, substantivism and fictional commodities. Polanyi’s work is a timely critique of the excesses of modern market freedom, deregulation and privatization, which he begins in humanity’s ancient past.
You will be in a group with other like-minded people in a relaxed setting and guided by our fantastic Philosophy tutor. There will be opportunities for questions and lively discussion with your peers. Hot drinks will be available and a member from the WEA will be there to discuss any other courses you may be interested in.
