Course overview

Leaf, Lore & Legend II explores the profound relationship between people and the diverse flora of the British landscape. Touching on the origins of the Ogham alphabet, which associates letters with trees, meanings, and spiritual qualities, the course considers a number of plants associated with its characters, and the myths and legends that surround them. Combining ecology, history, and fable, the talk offers a holistic understanding of trees, shrubs, and plants in the UK and their deep roots in the British landscape.

Course description

Trees and plants are living presences that have shaped Britain’s physical and imaginative realms for thousands of years. Leaf, Lore & Legend II takes a closer look at a suite of trees which have inspired both awe and storytelling.

We explore how meaning and landscape intertwine through the Ogham alphabet, considering the spiritual and symbolic roles of these trees, shrubs and plants.

Whilst the core lens is Celtic, other folklore and traditions are considered allowing us to examine their traditional practical uses in daily life and how those roles provided the origins of myth and symbolism.

Whether through spirituality, folklore, or a love of nature, this course offers a thoughtful exploration of the enduring bond between people and the British Isles’ diverse botanical heritage.
