Award in ESOL Skills for Life (Reading) (Level 1)

Course overview
Develop confidence to read advanced texts in English. This ESOL course teaches you different reading techniques and helps expand your vocabulary. Learn how to improve your reading skills to get the most out of living in the UK.
This ESOL level 1 reading course builds on skills you learnt at entry 3. You’ll continue to learn about different styles of text and gain tools to interpret them.
This is an English course for adults. It is aimed at speakers of other languages. ESOL courses are divided into three areas: reading, writing, and speaking & listening.

Course description
What we’ll cover
Understand how features of language can achieve different purposes, for example, to create instructions, descriptions, or explanations
Develop reading techniques including skimming, scanning, or detailed reading
Recognise and understand a growing range of vocabulary
Identify the tone of a text from the vocabulary used
Recognise and use synonyms and antonyms
This ESOL level 1 course focuses on how to improve reading skills for adults.
You need previous knowledge to take this course, that’s why you’ll need to do a skills check to enrol. Don’t worry, this isn’t an exam. It’s for us to make sure you get on the right course for your level.

When you complete this module, you can continue with other ESOL skills for life level 1 courses. Once you finish the reading, writing, and speaking & listening courses, you can progress to level 2 ESOL courses.
There are also “Get Ready” courses between each module to prepare you for the next course.
What to expect
This ESOL reading course takes around 110 hours to complete.
Please note that you’ll need an internet connection to study online ESOL courses. This is so you can access our digital learning platform, Canvas.
