Course overview

This course will show initial practical skills and methods used in Drawing and Painting. Taking a calm and relaxed approach to exploring ways of seeing and expressing with a range of materials. It explores colour theory in Art and exploration of painting techniques to develop your observational skill levels. Simple exercises are followed to make connections between mark making and painting from observation. Reflective practice is encouraged to document and develop your ideas tracked through sketchbook notes. Development of these skills will enable your confidence to produce imaginative and creative work.

Course description

10 weekly practical sessions that enable you to expand observational and reflective skills. This is achieved through a guided brief and themed practical exercises, which build up each week in exploring and extending creative approaches and style in both drawing and painting. 

We will be looking at the work of some well known historical and contemporary Artists’ approaches to their art. We will make a visual study of the cultural and historical context that influenced their work.

Through observational studies of still life and themed drawing and painting tasks, with plenary sessions to build confidence in meeting some of the challenges in observational drawing and painting. 

Sketchbooks are used creatively to experiment with techniques and styles of different painting and drawing mediums. Your own ideas and influences are explored in more depth by making comparison with some contemporary and historical contexts and in artists different approaches in fine art. 

Tutor feedback and class interaction is encouraged to guide and inform your decision making in practical artwork. The class has a relaxed but focussed atmosphere that you can feel supported in and can nurture your skills and interest in art and challenges your creative impetus and enhances your creative wellbeing.
