Course overview

A short two-hour course that focuses on the forgotten Queens of medieval England and the role they played in shaping the past, to celebrate International Women's Day 2025

Course description

The course looks at the Queens of England, who remain largely in the shadows. Emma of Normandy married two Kings and a woman who was twice crowned queen. Matilda of Boulogne, the wife of King Stephen, whose efforts thwarted her cousin the Empress Matilda in her own bid for the throne. Adeliza of Louvain, Berengaria of Navarre, Isabella of Angouleme and Margaret of France, all of whom played their part in the development of our shared English heritage but who rarely are acknowledged or remembered.
