Course overview

This course provides an in-depth exploration of the major political, social, and military developments that shaped the United States throughout the 20th century. Students will examine key events, movements, and figures that influenced the nation's trajectory, including the impact of the two World Wars, the Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, and the rise of the USA as a global superpower. Additionally, the course will consider the evolution of domestic policies, cultural shifts, and economic changes during this period. Through critical analysis, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how these developments have shaped modern America.

Course description

The first part of the course will focus on the period from 1900 to the Attack on Pearl Harbor in Dec 1941 and will feature the Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and will explore the reasons why America entered the First World War. The course will also look at the role of the Industrial pioneers such as Rockefeller and Henry Ford The second part of the course will feature the period in America after the war starting with looking at Joseph McCarthy and the Anti-Communist purge. Another feature is the Presidency of JF Kennedy, The Cuban Missile Crisis and his assassination in 1963 The final part of the course will focus on The Vietnam War, Martin Luther King, The Iraq War and the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.
