Course overview

In 1989, the songwriter Billy Joel was told by a friend that “Things are different today. You were a kid in the fifties, and everybody knows that nothing happened in the fifties.” As a result, he wrote ‘We didn’t start the fire’ to highlight how the post-war decades shaped the world we live in today. Join us for this fascinating 6 week course where you will look at the crucial events that occurred between 1940 and 1972 in USA and reflect about their significance back then as well as how it translates into today’s society.

Course description

The USA in 1940 was a nation that was yet to emerge from the economic depression of the 1930s. The war changed that and changed America’s outlook on the world. Yet, the nation that fought Hitler and Naziism for freedom and democracy did so with armed forces that were segregated. The war had a profound effect on the status of American women in society and kick-started the movement toward Civil Rights reform. As the USA emerged from the war as a global superpower, she turned inwards as she confronted Communists, real and imaginary, at home and abroad. These are the decades of Containment, Cold War and Consumerism – the USA 1940 -72.
