Course overview

Part 2 of a brief introduction to the rich cinema of Latin America. It gives you an opportunity to explore the rich film industries of Latin America whose influence on world cinema is bigger than you may have thought despite decades of political turmoil, in some cases heavy censorship, and the influence of its Northern neighbour, Hollywood. This half-day course will focus on the international resurgence of Latin American Cinema since the 1990s, including New Mexican Cinema, the works of Latin American auteurs like active in the US and Europe like Walter Salles and Alfonso Cuarón.

Course description

Latin America has produced key figures and movements in film history and some of its most original and thought-provoking works. In this 3-hour session you’ll get an opportunity to find out about a selection of them as a springboard for further exploration. This course is for those interested in film. It is open to those new to film studies and Latin American cinema as well as those who already have experience. Part of an occasional series of ‘film studies day schools’ it is intended to give participants a first introduction to the cinema of the region as a basis for further study. During our session, we will look at selected clips from a range of films and discuss them. It isn’t a prerequisite to watch all of the films in their entirety for this course. Background on the historic, social, economic, and cultural context, the directors and films will be provided as will resources on further viewing and reading afterwards.
