Part of the WEA Art and About Festival 2024! As part of the Festival, come and discover the highlights of the architecture of Greenwich. Having been a royal place of residence for several centuries, this part of London is rich in history. In this field-trip, we will study the architecture of the Queen’s House, its interior and exterior designs making it a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture. We will then turn our attention to the Royal Naval College and St Alfege’s, prime examples of English classical architecture. Meeting point: in front of the Queen’s House, in Greenwich (Romney Rd, SE10 9NF)

Course description

In this field-trip, we will visit and study some emblematic building in Greenwich. While doing so, you will learn about history and architecture. We will me at 10:30 in front of the Queen’s House (Romney Road). After examining the outside features and style of Inigo Jones’ masterpiece and how it sits in its surroundings (the park, the Thames, the Royal Naval College), we will enter the building and discover its interior, in particular the great hall. We will see what makes it a great example of Renaissance architecture. We will then cross the road and walk around the Royal Naval College. We will look at the façades, and learn how to describe their main features. We will discuss the role of famous architects Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor in the designing of this ensemble. Finally, we will walk to St Alfege Church on Greenwich Church Street and learn about this history of this classical building, designed by Hawksmoor. There will be many occasions to sit down and keep discussing while resting our legs. If you wish, you can bring a light lunch with you to have during a 15-minute break.
