Course overview

This course is specifically designed for individuals who are looking to build foundational mathematical skills with a focus on practical applications in the context of employment. Whether it's looking at vacancies, start and end times, and general information around workplace vocabulary involving numeracy. This course will help you navigate your way around numeracy for work and teach you how to calculate and understand vacancies and jobs better. It will also introduce you to a plethora of jobs and professions and roles performed in some jobs. You will listen to people talk about what they like in their jobs and what they dislike about their jobs. You will therefore be able to write and describe actions in the present and future tenses.

Course description

This course will work with students needing to take their first steps towards formal numeracy qualifications in order to get employment in the UK. E.g. refugees needing to upskill to UK Maths qualifications but needing support to understand the system in the UK and the basic language of Maths. This course can lead to a FS Maths qualification and it will focus on numeracy for work, especially in terms of understanding job advertisements, weekly/monthly hours, contracts and job roles. The main focus of the course will be to build your confidence around numeracy for work and help you search for jobs easier whilst understanding the details of job vacancies. You will be able to read about different jobs and discuss job roles while developing your vocabulary. You will also have an opportunity to complete a simple job application form and learn to be able to identify some of the most common signs and symbols found in a workplace. We will look at job advertisements in detail and answer questions about the specifics of the adverts and identify some of the important vocabulary related to types of jobs and types of contracts along with weekly and monthly hours as displayed on job advertisements.
