Course overview

The Maldon Embroidery celebrates 1000 years of history in stitches. Find out about the ideas behind the Embroidery, who worked it and how and where this modern piece sits in a long tradition of embroidery and tapestry. We'll pick out the details on the vibrant panels to locate and tell the stories of Maldon’s past from the Battle of Maldon, through the Industrial Revolution and into the present.

Course description

In this one-off session we will familiarise ourselves with the Maldon Embroidery, how it came about, who worked on it and how it was designed and made. We’ll consider each of the seven panels in turn, picking out the themes and motifs in the design and exploring the history of Maldon through some of its most famous events and recognisable people and buildings. We’ll support our learning with photos and maps so that you can visit the embroidery and the places it shows at a time that is good for you. You can expect a slide presentation, discussion and notes, including details of when and how to see the Maldon Embroidery for yourself.
